MaxLinear and Zinwell Bring Multi-Gigabit MoCA-to-Wi-Fi Adapter to Market

  • MaxLinear’s Multi-Gigabit MoCA 2.5 SoC enables Zinwell’s MoCA-to-Wi-Fi adapter for whole-home Wi-Fi coverage and an exceptional subscriber experience

LAS VEGAS — (BUSINESS WIRE) — January 3, 2017 — MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for cable and satellite broadband communications, the connected home, data center, metro, long-haul fiber networks and wireless infrastructure, today announced that its MxL3710 multi-gigabit MoCA 2.5 solution has been selected for use in Zinwell’s ZMW-D391 dual-band concurrent, multi-gigabit MoCA-to-Wi-Fi adapter.

Achieving high-throughput Wi-Fi coverage through an entire home is extremely challenging for a single Wi-Fi access point (AP), especially as subscribers’ broadband data service expectations increase with operators offering faster broadband speeds. The Zinwell multi-gigabit MoCA-to-Wi-Fi adapter allows operators to use existing coax cables inside the home as a wired data backbone to deploy multiple access points for whole-home high-quality wireless video and data coverage.

As Wi-Fi becomes the predominant way that subscribers access the Internet, the Wi-Fi network in a home will see increased network loading as the number of connected devices grows rapidly. The internet-of-things (IoT) envisions a multiplicity of Wi-Fi-enabled devices spread around the home in sub-optimal locations relative to a single AP. Slow or intermittent Wi-Fi connections to the scattered to devices will result in frustrated customers and potential customer service truck rolls for MSOs. With multiple APs spread throughout the home, which support gigabit performance, an operator can address both coverage and speed.

“Zinwell’s ZMW-D391 MoCA-to-Wi-Fi adapter is yet another example of how a MoCA network can help solve real world problems for operators,” said Will Torgerson, MaxLinear Vice President & General Manager of the Broadband Group. “With better Wi-Fi coverage, operators will experience less service calls and more satisfied subscribers.”

MoCA-to-Wi-Fi Adapter Technical Details

The ZMW-D391 uses MaxLinear’s MxL3710 single-chip MoCA 2.5 integrated circuit (IC). The IC supports the MoCA 2.5 profile D standard, providing a minimum of 2.5 Gbps of MAC throughput and is backward interoperable with all previous versions of the MoCA standard. In addition, the MxL3710 has an enhanced mode that provides up to 3 Gbps of MAC throughput when the network consists of other products using MxL371x chips.

With a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz concurrent Wi-Fi IC from Celeno Communications, the adapter supports 4x4 spatial streams using 802.11ac/n. The adapter also includes two 1000Base-T Ethernet ports.

MaxLinear is exhibiting the MxL3710 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV, from January 5 - 8, 2017. Please contact a MaxLinear sales representative to arrange an appointment.
