Central to SCAD AT MIAMI is Chroma, an exhibition of immersive installations by renowned international artist and SCAD deFINE ART 2017 honoree Carlos Cruz-Diez, presented by the SCAD Museum of Art, in collaboration with Articruz and the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation. Chroma explores Cruz-Diez's experimental and multidisciplinary practice and examines the artist's groundbreaking color theory philosophies.

"SCAD AT MIAMI marries 'what's now' and 'what's next'. Just imagine: three rising stars of art and design standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a lion of contemporary art, the maestro himself, Carlos Cruz-Diez," said SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace. "Awash in chromaticity and creative vitality, SCAD AT MIAMI takes guests on an ecstatic journey. Join us, SCAD and Untitled, Miami Beach, for an unforgettable ride."

SCAD Art Sales, the university's full-service art consultancy, introduces new works by SCAD alumni artists Christopher Paul Dean (M.F.A., sculpture, 2016), Cory Imig (B.F.A., fibers, 2008) and Britt Spencer (professor of illustration; M.F.A., painting, 2011; B.F.A., illustration, 2005) — three artists who, like Cruz-Diez, use vibrant color, pattern and crisp lines as primary elements in their compositions. SCAD Art Sales is located within the Untitled, Miami Beach pavilion at Booth #E28. Additional information is available at scadartsales.com.

This is the fourth year SCAD has exhibited during Miami Art Week. In previous years, the university presented CURVA, a solo exhibition of work by SCAD alumna Wendy White (B.F.A., fibers, 1993) that investigated the relationship between athletics and the artistic process; i feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin, an exploration of fashion, film and painting through the eyes of three dynamic artists: multihyphenate performer André 3000 Benjamin, filmmaker Greg Brunkalla (B.F.A., video/film, 2001) and painter Jimmy O'Neal (M.F.A., painting, 2016; B.F.A., illustration, 1989); and Theater of Self, a joint presentation of fashion and photography featuring works by London-based artist Daniel Lismore and SCAD alumni Bin Feng (M.F.A., photography, 2017) and Colin Douglas Gray (B.F.A., photography, 2004).

Additional SCAD AT MIAMI events scheduled throughout the week include a VIP and press preview, an alumni artist conversation, as well as workshops and admission information sessions for prospective students and families.

Untitled, Miami Beach takes place at Ocean Drive and 12th Street, Miami Beach, Florida.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Chroma
The SCAD Museum of Art, in collaboration with Articruz and the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation, presents Chroma, a traveling exhibition by renowned international artist and color theorist Carlos Cruz-Diez. The exhibition includes a large-scale public artwork, a series of recent works and three new documentaries that examine the artist's life and prolific career.

The exhibition's title is derived from the Latinized form of the Greek 'khroma,' originally referring to the color and quality of skin and later evolving to indicate the quality or intensity of a hue. Like this word, Chroma considers Cruz-Diez's fundamental concerns regarding the transformative possibility that color is diachronic and unstable, dependent on individual perception, space and context. Cruz-Diez's works are — aside from their aesthetic uniqueness — provocations completed by the viewers' movement in the artist's chromatic environments, where objects deliver a profound viewer experience. In the words of Cruz-Diez himself, "The world of color is the world of emotion."

Chroma spans several prominent areas of the Untitled, Miami Beach pavilion. A concise selection of new works presented within the main entrance provides an overview of Cruz-Diez's conceptual concerns. An outdoor intervention extends the dialogue into the public space, a strategy in which the artist invites viewers to integrate an experience with color into their daily routines. A large, altered shipping container, also located outside the pavilion, holds Chromosaturation, a series of connected color chambers that provides an intangible experience of pure color. These public gestures encourage viewers to reformulate their relationships to the urban landscape as a space that can be inhabited both critically and joyfully.

The exhibition, first presented at the SCAD Museum of Art, Feb. 21–Aug. 20, 2017, is curated by Storm Janse van Rensburg, SCAD head curator of exhibitions, and SCAD alumna Raquel Serebrenik Sultan (B.F.A., art history, 2015). Chroma was selected as an Untitled, Miami Beach Special Project by Omar López-Chahoud, independent curator and artistic director of Untitled, Art.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Carlos Cruz-Diez
French-Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1923, and has lived and worked in Paris since 1960. He is a major protagonist in the field of Kinetic and Op Art, a movement that encourages "an awareness of the instability of reality." His body of work has established him as one of the key 20th-century thinkers in the realm of color.

Cruz-Diez's research, based on three color conditions (subtractive, additive and reflective), has contributed to a new way of understanding color phenomena in art, greatly expanding its perceptual universe. In his works, he shows that color, through interaction with the viewer, becomes an autonomous, evolving reality, devoid of anecdotes, which evolves in real time and space. His work includes research he has called Couleur Additive, Physichromie, Induction Chromatique, Chromointerférence, Transchromie, Chromosaturation and Couleur dans l'espace.

His artworks are housed in prestigious permanent collections at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York ; Tate Modern, London ; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas ; the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, Germany ; the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris ; and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
