Toshiba Memory America’s Storage Node Software Obtains Industry-First NVMe-oF Certification

New Software Category Enables New Levels of Data Center Efficiency for Cloud Architectures

SAN JOSE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 12, 2017Toshiba Memory America, Inc. (TMA), the US-based subsidiary of Toshiba Memory Corporation, today announced that its storage node software, which enables low latency networked flash storage for cloud architectures, was the first to be certified by the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL). As the leading testing and certification lab for NVMe technology and software, the UNH-IOL thoroughly tested TMA’s software with RoCE NIC in the storage node at its NVMe Plugfest #8, held October 30 - November 2 in Durham, New Hampshire. This Plugfest was the first to test NVMe-oF™ (NVM Express® over Fabrics) 1 components, including NVMe-oF software.

The demands of performance-intensive cloud workloads are best addressed through higher IOPs, lower latencies and superior reliability – all of which NVMe SSDs provide. A network protocol that enables faster access between hosts and storage systems technologies, NVMe-oF allows infrastructures to fully leverage the capacity and performance of NVMe SSDs. As a leading provider of NVMe SSDs, technology and software, TMA is committed to making NVMe-oF truly deployable in cloud data centers.

According to Jeremy Werner, vice president of SSD marketing and product planning for TMA, “Our customers are transitioning their data center infrastructures from DAS-based storage to a disaggregated, shared-storage model. With this in mind, we have designed our roadmap to be extremely robust, including software to optimize the use of NVMe SSDs in a fabric. Successfully completing the rigorous NVMe Plugfest testing gives us a competitive advantage, and we look forward to extending our track record of delivering innovative, award-winning technologies to the market.”

Developed with a strong focus on virtualizing, managing and securing data, TMA’s sophisticated, standards-based software stack is feature-rich for storage abstraction for containers and virtual machines. It provides secure flash access, API access to orchestration frameworks and takes advantage of the unique performance and endurance characteristics of NVMe SSDs.

At the conclusion of certification testing, TMA’s software was noted as being highly mature and full-featured. “In our first plugfest featuring NVMe-oF software and hardware, we were happy to see TMA’s storage node software pass certification,” noted David Woolf, senior engineer, Datacenter Technologies, UNH-IOL. “TMA’s software is the first software target solution on the NVMe-oF software integrator’s list.”
