OGC Announces Earth Observation Exploitation Platform Hackathon 2018

Hackathon will test the readiness of new, interoperable cloud-deployment architectures for processing of Earth Observation data

OGC Earth Observation Hackathon

13 February 2018: The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is calling for participation in its upcoming Earth Observation Exploitation Platform Hackathon 2018. Contact: Email Contact

The Hackathon builds on results from the recently concluded OGC Testbed-13 initiative, and paves the way for Tested-14 and subsequent initiatives in the context of standards based deployment and execution of applications in cloud environments.

The goal of the Hackathon is to demonstrate that the Testbed-13 results, described in the Engineering Reports OGC Testbed-13: Exploitation Platform Application Package, OGC Testbed-13: Application Deployment and Execution Service, and OGC Testbed-13: Cloud, are fit for purpose. Given that these Engineering Reports state several options, this Hackathon shall identify the best solution and identify any missing elements as basis for Testbed-14 and future initiatives.

The Hackathon provides a business opportunity for stakeholders to experiment with the latest results from Testbed-13 in the context of ESA’s Earth Observation (EO) Exploitation Platforms. Participants will establish design decisions that influence the upcoming Testbed-14 and future work in the context of application handling in cloud environments. Participants can establish robust relationships with OGC members active in geospatial cloud processing, with sponsoring organizations, and participate in essential stages of the standardization process.

The Hackathon will run from March to May 2018, with a Clarification Webinar for prospective participants on February 19. A Kickoff Workshop at OGC’s Technical and Planning Committee Meeting in Orléans, France (attendable remotely) will mark the beginning of the Hackathon.

The Hackathon is executed under the OGC Innovation Program, which provides global, hands-on, collaborative prototyping for rapid development and delivery of candidate specifications to other Innovation Program activities and the OGC Standards Program.

Participation is open to OGC Members and non-members alike, and anyone with experience in cloud and container technology as well as OGC Web services, is urged to participate. For more information on the Hackathon, including how to participate and a schedule of events, visit: go.myogc.org/EOCHack.

About OGC

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international consortium of more than 525 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards support interoperable solutions that ‘geo-enable’ the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. OGC standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful within any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.
