Three new leaders elected at AIA Conference on Architecture 2018

The 2020 president-elect, the 2019-2020 secretary, and an at-large director were elected in New York.

NEW YORK – June 22, 2018 The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announces three new leaders to its Board of Directors, which were elected last night at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 (A’18).

At the meeting, AIA delegates elected:

  • L. Jane Frederick, FAIA of AIA South Carolina as the 2019 first vice president/2020 president-elect;
  • Jason Winters, AIA of AIA Chesapeake Bay/AIA Maryland as the 2019-2020 secretary; and
  • Jessica Sheridan, AIA of AIA New York as the at-large director.

From 2016 to 2017, Frederick served as an at-large director of the AIA Board of Directors while chairing the Board Public Outreach Committee and serving on the Board Visibility & Engagement Task Force. Previously, she served as the regional director of the South Atlantic Region from 2012 to 2015. Frederick also chaired the Small Firm Round Table’s Executive Committee in 2014 and served as president of AIA South Carolina in 2010. She has been a principal at Frederick + Frederick Architects since 1989 and received her B.Arch. from Auburn University.

“To create a future with better buildings, better communities and a better world, we have to be flexible, nimble and seize opportunities to turn dilemmas into advantages,” Frederick said. “As architects, when we are at our best, we don’t talk about the future—we create it.”

A principal at Frederick + Frederick Architects since 1989, she received her B.Arch. from Auburn University.

Jason Winters, AIA, 2019-2020 Secretary

Winters recently served on AIA’s Strategic Council, both as the moderator and liaison to the AIA National Associates Committee. His AIA service includes terms on AIA’sContinuing Education Committee, the Public Awareness & Advocacy Committee, and the Federal Architecture Task Group. In 2014 he served as president of AIA Maryland. He was also president of AIA Chesapeake Bay in 2008.

“I believe the secretary should continue to fulfill the vision of repositioning the Institute,” Winters said, “placing AIA as a robust professional organization with prominent leadership in all aspects of the built environment—past, present and future.”

Winters has served as a principal at Kezlo Group since 2013 and received a B.Arch. from Drexel University, a M.Arch. from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in liberal arts at Johns Hopkins University.

Jessica Sheridan, AIA, At-large Director

In 2018, Sheridan served on AIA’s Knowledge Committee after a three-year stint as a New York regional representative on the AIA Strategic Council. She was also named an AIA Louise Bethune Fellow in 2018 and received an AIA Young Architects Award in 2017.

“We are experiencing a pivotal moment at AIA,” said Sheridan. “Connecting with our membership is more important now than ever. We need to be ambitious and proactive. AIA must think boldly and aspirationally about our profession.”

Sheridan is a senior associate at Mancini Duffy since 2017, she received a B.A. in visual arts and architecture from Oberlin College and her M.Arch. from the Rhode Island School of Design.
