The First Geological Remote Sensing Group Oil & Gas Workshop Was a Great Success

August 9, 2018 -- The Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG) inaugural North American Oil & Gas Workshop was held recently in Boulder, CO and has been hailed as a great success by sponsors, speakers and attendees alike.

With over 90 attendees from across North America and from as far away as Brazil, UK, Norway and Italy, the two-day event hosted at the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) at the University of Colorado focused on how remote sensing is being used within oil and gas companies and how the technology can provide new and actionable benefits across the industry.

The technical programme, including a keynote from Shell, covered the breadth of the oil and gas life cycle with presentations from data/hardware suppliers, users and research institutions.

Chevron’s Christian Haselwimmer is the GRSG’s International Liaison for North America, and he explained what had made this event such a success; “It was great to see so many high-quality presentations from industry, academic, commercial, and government participants and I really learnt a lot in terms of the current state of the technology and its applications to the oil and gas industry.”

“Hosting the event in Boulder was really a great decision in terms of the nexus of industry, academia, and federal organizations that are located there. It was great to connect with old colleagues and to meet with many participants who were new to the GRSG and I certainly left with the feeling that there is a strong desire from our community to plan for future targeted events like these

GRSG Chairman, Charlotte Bishop commented how this events and futures ones like it fit within the expansion plans for the Group; “Events like this are not only a showcase on a specific topic of interest but a chance to bring likeminded people together under a GRSG banner to share their ideas. This outreach, particularly as a voluntary organization, albeit with a strong international following, is still important and reinforced by the fact that so many who attended this event were not prior members. Free membership was included with every non-membership registration and we were delighted to be able to announce this to the delegates during the event and therefore welcome so many new members.

She continued; “It is clear that there was, and continues to be, appetite for events like this outside of our normal Events calendar and we will continue to support those in all regions as we continue to widen our outreach ever further, all part of our Moving Forwards in 2018 plan.
