The workbook provides a series of exercises that teach readers how to use ArcGIS Pro, Esri's powerful project-based desktop GIS application, and work with it in conjunction with ArcGIS Online, Esri's cloud-based GIS. This edition, updated for the new ArcGIS Pro 2.3, starts with an introduction to GIS and its usefulness in analyzing, visualizing, managing, and sharing spatial information to solve problems and make decisions. Chapter 1 also covers basic GIS principles and concepts, offers a short overview of ArcGIS Pro, and provides a hands-on mapping exercise in ArcGIS Online.

The chapters that follow walk readers through exercises for common GIS workflows including starting new projects, labeling features, making 2D maps and 3D scenes, creating and editing spatial data, authoring geoprocessing models, running a Python command and script tool, preparing a database and map for data collection, collecting data using Esri's Collector for ArcGIS mobile app, geocoding location data, analyzing spatial and temporal patterns, determining land-use suitability, and sharing projects.

Workbook authors Michael Law and Amy Collins said they wanted to give readers a "broad overview" of ArcGIS Pro, focusing on typical workflows and industries that use GIS. "When you complete this book, you should feel comfortable enough with ArcGIS Pro to start working with it on your own," they wrote in the new edition's preface.

Both Law and Collins are well-versed in GIS. Law worked at Rand McNally Canada and later as a cartographer for Esri. He's now based in Toronto, Canada, where he continues to use GIS in his work as a cartographer and technical writer. Collins worked as a technical writer at Esri for several years. She's currently a freelance writer and editor in the San Francisco Bay area, where she continues to do educational and technical writing.

Getting to Know ArcGIS Pro, second edition, is available in print (ISBN: 9781589485372, 512 pages, US$84.99) and as an e-book (ISBN: 9781589485389, 512 pages, US$84.99).
