Scan Dimension Unveils SOL, the Market's Most User-Friendly 3D Scanner Available

Makers, Tech Enthusiasts and Hobbyists Can Now Produce Professional-Grade 3D Scans at an Affordable Price

CHANTILLY, Va., April 10, 2019 — (PRNewswire) —   Scan Dimension®, developer of 3D scanners, imaging, and realization technology, today launches SOL, an easy-to-use 3D scanner for the everyday maker, technology enthusiast, and hobbyist. Immediately available, SOL is an accurate, portable, and affordable 3D scanner that creates detailed, precise 3D models of scanned objects. The SOL viewer application allows users to export and share the model in many standard formats.

Scan Dimension unveils SOL, the market’s most user-friendly 3D scanner available. Produce professional-grade 3D scans at an affordable price with SOL.

"We created the SOL scanner to make 3D scanning approachable for everyone," comments Graham Tinn, CEO of Global Scanning A/S, parent company of Scan Dimension. "Before, creating 3D models was challenging if an individual was not skilled in complex 3D modeling software. SOL empowers anyone to unleash their creativity and explore the infinite possibilities of 3D technology actualization."

SOL provides significant value for 3D technology enthusiasts. It eliminates three important hurdles to 3D scanning: complex calibration, time-consuming software manipulation, and manual mesh alignment.

In the Field

Makers at Hammerspace Community Workshop in Kansas City, Missouri, and Make Salt Lake makerspace in Salt Lake City, Utah, tested SOL and had this to say:

"SOL is a great 3D scanner that easily competes with multi-thousand-dollar scanners that we have here at the makerspace." – David Dalton, Hammerspace Community Workshop

"This scanner is freakin' awesome." – Hobbyist, Make Salt Lake

How it Works

The Scan Dimension engineering team focused on developing an incredibly easy-to-use scanner. To start a scan, users simply place an object on a turntable, cover it with the included tent, and press a button — the laser, camera, and software do the rest.

SOL notifies users of next steps with sounds or text messages. SOL features near- and far-mode scanning, and supports the following dimensions and maximum weight:

  • For near-mode scanning, an object up to 100 mm in diameter and 100 mm tall (3.9 by 3.9 inches).
  • For far-mode scanning, an object up to 170 mm in diameter and 170 mm tall (6.69 by 6.69 inches).
  • Maximum scannable weight is 2kg (4.4 lbs. or 70.5 ounces).

SOL requires PC Windows 10 or Mac OS X 10.13 (High Sierra). Hardware requirements include a 64-bit processor with dual core RAM, 5 GB hard disk space or higher, OpenGL 3.3+ compatible graphics card, 1024 x 768 pixel display or higher, 2 USB 2.0 ports available.

Where to Buy

SOL retails for $599 and includes the hardware, software, tent, cover, cables, cleaning cloth, and a sample object to scan in order to produce precise 3D scans. SOL is immediately available for purchase through Scan Dimension's website at https://scandimension.com.
