In recent years, the EU has adopted measures to improve energy efficiency – including the Ecodesign Directive, in which its agencies are currently establishing efficiency criteria for power supplies. These criteria are expected to become decidedly more stringent regarding standby or vampire loads (electronic products that are plugged in but are not in use or are using very low power) – and power supplies built using conventional methods will fall short.
