3Dconnexion Launches Intelligent SpacePilot

3Dconnexion’s SpacePilot dramatically boosts 3D productivity

Intelligent device defines the future for professional user interfaces

Executing on its strategy of delivering professional user interface devices and software, 3Dconnexion, a Logitech (SWX:LOGN) (NASDAQ:LOGI) company, today announced SpacePilot, the first Intelligent Motion Controller. Created to dramatically boost productivity, the new device couples next generation 3D motion control with an array of function keys powered by breakthrough adaptive technology. SpacePilot incorporates a built-in LCD display that allows users to easily view dynamically labelled and extendable key assignments, providing an almost unlimited number of functions based on the user’s current task.
"The new SpacePilot is a giant leap forward in improving user interface productivity for SolidWorks. The power and intelligence behind the new function keys is the most innovative thing to happen to input devices since the mouse. Its ability to automatically sense the SolidWorks mode I am in, appropriately map applicable functions to the speed keys, and display the mapping on the convenient LCD makes the SpacePilot a must have for any SolidWorks user,” said Brian Titus, Technical Manager at GEI Technology, a SolidWorks reseller.

The SpacePilot brings to market breakthrough technology developed after extensive research into CAD and animation user workflows. Rapid, single key access to frequent application commands is provided via the new and easily accessible function speed keys, which feature LCD-based labelling that dynamically updates based on given applications and functions. These keys can be organised into multiple banks – the ability to switch banks gives you access to an unlimited number of keys. Other keys are labelled for common functions across professional 3D applications such as keyboard modifiers (Ctrl, Shift, Alt, Esc), standard orthographic views and the fit function.

The SpacePilot offers a new level of control and mastery in today’s professional 3D applications. The redesigned controller cap, refined spring suspension and fine-tuned software deliver superior, fingertip handling and precision control. Greg Scott, a Senior Engineer using Unigraphics at Moog Inc., a worldwide manufacturer of precision flight control components and systems stated: “The words precise’ and responsive’ come to mind after using the SpacePilot. I can initiate pan, zoom, and rotate in a single fluid motion which is impossible to do with just a mouse. I also use various applications like CATIA, ProE/Mechanica and Microsoft Office simultaneously in a computer session. I find the SpacePilot’s ability to adapt instantly and adjust map keys appropriately to the active application a welcome advancement.”

Recognising that the navigation and function key requirements vary by application, SpacePilot uses auto-sensing technology to set the controller’s navigation and functionality of its keys for the current application. Speed keys adapt not only to a change in the application, but also to specific tasks within the application. For example, in some applications during part modelling mode, users have access to one set of functions, and as they switch to assembly mode, the SpacePilot automatically switches to a different set of functions. The new function modes are then displayed in SpacePilot’s new dynamic LCD.
The SpacePilot supports the same list of over 100 content creation, design, analysis and manufacturing applications as the SpaceBall and SpaceMouse products. It is available immediately through 3Dconnexion’s worldwide resellers and distributors.
