Architectural Design and Urban Planning Evolving to Support Autonomous Air and Ground Vehicles

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (Nov. 16, 2020) – JDavis, an architecture and urban planning firm, joined the Advanced Mobility Collective in its mission to help accelerate the innovative use of autonomous air and ground vehicles.

The firm, with offices in Raleigh and Philadelphia, will collaborate with the broad range of members of The Collective to envision how the design of buildings and surrounding areas will support advanced mobility.

“The Collective is gathering all stakeholders around a common vision,” said JDavis Partner and Technical Director Matt Ansley. “We are already collaborating with members of The Collective to explore how to incorporate innovative building design and urban planning to support advanced mobility that connects our communities in new ways.”

The Advanced Mobility Collective is a community for collaboration to bring new mobility services to life, including autonomous air and ground vehicles. The Collective is a nonprofit global community of business, technology, government and research partners.

“JDavis is on the leading edge of exploring how people will interact with new mobility services with innovative building designs,” said Todd Spain, executive director of The Collective. “The firm has thought of design considerations that most of us have not yet considered. Urban planning is about to forever be changed to blend with advanced mobility services.”

Spain said building and urban planning designs will incorporate take-off and landing spaces to blend with the transfer of people and products using drones and autonomous vehicles and robots on the ground. New mobility services including unmanned aerial systems and urban air mobility systems (UAM) are expected to revolutionize the transportation of people and goods with highly automated and autonomous cargo and passenger transportation services. Emerging services range from medical package and food delivery to transportation, including airport shuttles, air taxi and air ambulances with electronic vertical takeoff and landing drones (eVTOLs), autonomous vehicles and robotic transportation systems in smart cities.

Bringing advanced mobility services to communities requires collaboration among technology providers, municipalities, researchers, regulators and funding sources. The ecosystem is evolving and collaboration is essential. “No single company or stakeholder can do it all,” Spain said. “From wireless communications and physical infrastructure to airspace management, urban planning, policy and regulation, insurance, and private investment, many contributions are needed to align communities, operators and governmental agencies. Visionary architecture design and engineering firms including JDavis and Collective member Stewart, a design, engineering and planning firm, are two of the many companies helping communities shape the future of advanced mobility.”

The Collective is continuing to build and expand its network of partners as an economic development initiative of The Wireless Research Center.
