Azul 3D Appoints Chemist Mike Idacavage to Advisory Board

Idacavage is a leading expert in UV curing and 3D-printing polymeric resins and adhesives

SKOKIE, Ill. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 5, 2021 — Mike J. Idacavage, an expert in ultraviolet (UV) curing technology and 3D-printing resins, has joined the scientific advisory board of Azul 3D.

A longtime leader in UV and electron-beam curing, Idacavage founded Radical Curing LLC, where he is a liaison between the company and its customers and a technical adviser on a wide range of innovative and groundbreaking projects.

“Mike has an incredible background in polymers for 3D printing, both in academia and industry,” said Paul Decker, Azul 3D’s CEO. “In addition to our high-area rapid printing (HARP) technology, we are developing a vast palette of new light-cured resins, which enable us to print a broad spectrum of components that are rigid, elastic, flexible or ceramic. Mike’s expertise fits perfectly as we develop new materials that facilitate the 3D printing of mainstream products.”

“I am extremely excited to support the Azul 3D team as it successfully transforms additive manufacturing from its early stages to becoming standard industrial practice,” Idacavage said. “Azul’s innovative technology will greatly expand the performance of a 3D-printed part for commercial applications, and I look forward to being a part of this groundbreaking effort.”

Idacavage has worked in the energy-curing industry for 36 years — ever since venturing into Eastman Chemicals’ photopolymer lab in 1985. Since then, he has served in leadership roles at NAPP Systems, UCB Chemicals, Cytec, PL Industries and Colorado Photopolymer Solutions. Idacavage is an active member of energy-curing association RadTech North America, where he was secretary and then president of its executive board of directors. He also received RadTech’s 2003 Presidential Award for Outstanding Achievements to the Radiation Curing Industry.

Idacavage received his bachelor’s in chemistry from Drexel University and his Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry from Syracuse University. He also teaches courses in UV curable polymer chemistry and UV-driven 3D printing at SUNY-ESF.

ABOUT AZUL 3DTM

Azul 3DTM is a leading-edge 3D printing company that is transforming the additive manufacturing industry. Initially invented at Northwestern University, HARPTM prints 3D structures from a wide pallet of materials. The initial printers based upon HARP are capable of manufacturing parts at production speeds, regardless of size, with a throughput dramatically outpacing its competitors and becoming competitive with injection molding. Azul 3D is enabling manufacturers to transition from prototype to mass-manufacturing on a single, streamlined production platform. In combination with proprietary industrial-grade materials, it offers the opportunity for just-in-time mass production of diverse, highly customized products.
