SpeedGauge Receives U.S. Patent for Driver Safety Using GPS

June 11, 2008 -- SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- SpeedGauge®, a provider of fleet analytics solutions and services, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,356,392 titled "System and method for evaluating vehicle and operator performance."

The invention relates to the field of safety management of one or more vehicles, and more particularly, to a system and method for analyzing information relating to a vehicle's performance characteristics such as speed against environmental attributes such as speed limits to assess a vehicle and operator's tendency to operate according to preset or other criteria.

For example, using vector data reported by GPS-equipped vehicle, a fleet manager can asses the relative performance of drivers in a fleet and identify high-risk driving behavior for improved management and training. These analytics can also be used in risk analysis and insurance underwriting.

SpeedGauge has commercialized the concepts of this invention as SpeedGaugeASP driver safety technology since 2004. Now in commercial deployment through leading GPS tracking service providers such as PeopleNet Communications and Astral Communications, and in use every day by thousands of commercial vehicles across the United States and Canada, SpeedGauge has proven an ability to dramatically reduce excessive speeding and improve driver safety.

"We are very pleased that this first patent application has been issued and look forward to bringing other related technologies to our commercial partners," said Jonathan Hubbard, CEO of SpeedGauge, adding, "location analytics such as SpeedGaugeASP offer are a terrific way for fleets to derive even more value from their AVL hardware investments".
