Highly Integrated RGB LED Driver from STMicroelectronics Powers Eight Pixels from Single Chip, for Design and Cost Advantages

STP24DP05 delivers up to 80mA per output at 25MHz, with SPI port for accurate control and diagnostics

GENEVA, July 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- By providing 24 constant-current outputs capable of driving RGB LEDs at up to 80mA, the STP24DP05 from a world leader in analog, STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), performs the work of three conventional 8-output drivers within a compact TQFP48, 7 x 7mm footprint.

Using this device to drive video displays and signage comprising large numbers of high-brightness LEDs saves bill-of-materials costs compared to conventional devices with fewer outputs. By allowing closer spacing of pixels and constituent LEDs, the driver also enables higher display resolution. Major applications will include full-color RGB video display panels for indoor or outdoor use, LED advertisement billboards, graphic boards, colored traffic signs, and variable message signs.

The STP24DP05 is a serial-in, parallel-out FIFO supporting operation at 25MHz for high serial data rates enabling responsive image rendition. The driving current of 5-80mA per LED channel is adjusted using one external resistor per color group of eight outputs, allowing the maximum brightness of red, green and blue channels to be optimized independently. Accompanying its high drive capabilities, the 48-pin TQFP48 package features an exposed pad for efficient heat dissipation, ultimately enabling more lumens per Watt and optimum system reliability.

The device also implements built-in error detection for short-to-ground, short-to-supply or open-line faults. The error-detection mode can be controlled via the dedicated pin provided or using specific digital keys through the device's SPI port. Fault codes are shifted out of the device via the same SPI with no additional pin. This enables system-level diagnostic features, such as direct alerts to maintenance coordinators, which can effectively minimize system downtime. Thermal-shutdown protection is also integrated, with a dedicated flag pin to communicate device shutdown status.

The STP24DP05 is fabricated using ST's BCD6 process and is specified from -40 to +125 degrees C. Compatibility with 3.3V and 5V data levels promotes interoperability with a wide variety of host controllers, such as the 8-bit ST7FLITE MCU.

The STP24DP05 is available immediately for production orders, at prices from $1.50 in quantities of 100,000 units upwards.
