3D Laser Mapping Launches StreetMapper 360

October 08, 2008 -- 3D Laser Mapping has launched StreetMapper 360, giving the world’s most accurate mobile laser mapping system 360-degree vision. StreetMapper 360, which is designed for the rapid mapping of highways, infrastructure and buildings using vehicle mounted lasers, also incorporates a new lifting sensor platform to improve protection and maintenance of the sensors.

StreetMapper 360 is a result of a joint venture between 3D Laser Mapping, German guidance and navigation specialist IGI mbH and technology company Riegl. The system employs the latest laser scanning technology for improved field performance and accuracy, precision navigation including a solution for reduced GPS coverage in urban areas, combined with a flexible, modular configuration and increased ease of use and deployment. With a proven record in environments ranging from the Artic Circle to the tropics, StreetMapper technology has already been used by a wide variety of organisations including the Danish Road Directorate, Cambridgeshire Police, National Grid and Microsoft.

StreetMapper 360 offers a 360-degree field of view from the vehicle mounted laser scanners, with a range of 300m and a capacity of 150 measurements per second per sensor. By taking advantage of the latest V-Line range of scanners from Riegl, 3D Laser Mapping has combined new, higher performance sensors with Riegl’s trademark reliability, robustness and ease of use. The V-Line range also offers internal waveform processing to record unlimited returns per laser pulse and complete digital processing.

The onboard navigation system includes a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver, a fibre optic gyro based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the latest Direct Inertial Aiding (DIA) to assist in areas of poor GPS reception. StreetMapper is the only system on the market to offer this level of precision navigation, which has been proven to increase the speed with which the GPS receiver gets back to high positional accuracy after a loss of signal by up to 5 seconds.

“Not only is StreetMapper 360 the most technically advanced mobile mapping system, combining state of the art laser scanning technology with a market leading navigation system, it is also incredibly easy to use,” commented Dr Graham Hunter, Managing Director of 3D Laser Mapping. “The new lifting sensor platform is a significant innovation improving safety during installation and routine maintenance as working at height is not required, security as the sensors are stored out of sight when not in use and reliability as the equipment is protected from the elements.”
