HP First to Add New “Shanghai” Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processor to Workstation Lineup

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 20, 2008 – HP today announced the immediate addition of the highly anticipated “Shanghai” 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processor to the award-winning family of HP workstations.

The HP xw9400 workstation taps into the power of the new AMD Opteron processor to deliver power users a timely combination of extreme performance and low power consumption. The AMD Opteron processor provides an increase in workstation performance compared to the previous generation Opteron processor, plus a decrease in power consumption at idle.

Ideal for high-end workstation applications, such as engineering, 3-D digital content creation, oil and gas, and video editing, the HP xw9400 with the new AMD Opteron processor starts at a U.S. list price of $2,303(1) and is available for purchase at www.hp.com/go/workstations.

“Power users can rely on HP to deliver the best of the best when it comes to performance workstations,” said Jeff Wood, director, Worldwide Product Marketing, Workstations, HP. “HP will continue pushing the envelope of high performance while allowing for low levels of power consumption.”

The HP xw9400 offers the engineering advantages of HP’s highly tuned workstations along with new features from the AMD Opteron processor line, which offers the most dramatic performance and performance-per-watt increases from AMD since its introduction of the world’s first x86 dual-core processors nearly four years ago.

Demonstrating HP’s environmental leadership, the HP xw9400 is registered as an Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT™) Gold product, the highest rating available. All HP workstations are more than 90 percent recyclable by weight and incorporate a tool-less chassis design for quick and easy upgrades by hand. Each workstation includes an 80 PLUS power supply, which is substantially more efficient than a standard power supply, reducing both overall energy usage and the amount of waste heat released into the environment.

Companies use HP workstations to design everything from running shoes to race cars, animated characters to deep-sea submersibles, and to manage everything from billions of dollars of tradable securities to mission-critical IT environments.
