Avago Technologies Collaborates with the FAULHABER Group to Develop the World’s Smallest Rotary Encoder

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—January 12, 2009— Avago Technologies, a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, and the FAULHABER Group, a global leader in the design and development of DC motors, have announced the successful development and availability of the world’s smallest rotary encoder. FAULHABER’s PA2-50 low power, high resolution miniature rotary encoder incorporates Avago’s revolutionary AEDR-8400 optical integrated circuit (IC) making it ideal for use in a wide range of applications that require miniature motors.

Leveraging on each other’s industry-leading technologies, engineers at Avago and MicroMo Electronics, a FAULHABER affiliate in the United States, collaborated to design the PA2-50, which is the smallest optical encoder in the industry. The PA2-50 was designed with the AEDR-8400 chip on a flex-circuit to produce a single compact package with a miniature footprint measuring 3.00mm (L) x 3.28mm (W) x 1.26mm (H). The motor connections were integrated into the flex circuit to ensure a compact solution. Additionally, with the miniature AEDR-8400 optical chip, higher resolution can be achieved to meet the design requirements for a wide range of applications that require miniature motors with high precision positioning.

FAULHABER’s PA2-50 rotary encoder, which comes in a compact 6mm diameter package, uses optical technology to provide high resolution and low power consumption. The 8 mA at 3 V DC power consumption enables battery-operated applications to operate longer than the conventional 5-Volt encoders that are used by most competing brands. The end result is an ultra miniature rotary encoder solution with higher resolution, a more consistent signal, and higher efficiency due to lighter codewheel material, while ensuring low current consumption for a longer lasting battery-assisted operation.

Avago’s AEDR-8400 series are reflective technology encoders that have been designed with a transmitter and emitter located on the same SMT surface with a reflective codewheel to reflect, thus enabling the encoder solution to be much smaller than conventional optical encoders that use transmissive technology.
