Spijkstaal Elektro Selects Teamcenter Express and Solid Edge

’S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, February 2, 2009 – Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that Spijkstaal Elektro BV (Spijkstaal), a producer of electric vehicles, has selected Solid Edge® and Teamcenter® Express software for its 3D digital design and product data management, respectively.

Spijkstaal, which specializes in building prototypes, manufactures close to 500 electric vehicles per year. Spijkstaal products are used mainly at flower auctions, airports, car factories, manufacturing companies, hospitals, care institutions and local amenities all over Europe. Since Spijkstaal often produces a limited number of vehicles of each prototype design, computer-aided design (CAD) is viewed as a critical business process.

Solid Edge will allow Spijkstaal to migrate from 2D to 3D design, and Teamcenter Express will enhance collaboration within the company and across its global enterprise. Spijkstaal selected Siemens PLM Software’s product portfolio due to its wide use and success in the industry, and strong partner collaboration capabilities, which are required in designing electric vehicles.

“One of the major advantages of Siemens PLM Software’s Solid Edge and Teamcenter Express is that the systems are compatible with those of our partners,” said Wim Heijboer, general manager, Spijkstaal Elektro. “Solid Edge allows us to work much more accurately; for example we can tell early on in the design phase whether a component will fit or not. It is a real pleasure to design in 3D, previously, when designing in 2D we often encountered unexpected problems in the production plant.

“Siemens PLM Software’s technology combined with the excellent implementation and training of our designers provided by CADCenter, made this the best solution for Spijkstaal,” added Heijboer.

CADCenter BV, a Siemens PLM Software solution partner, oversaw the implementation.

“We have seen an increased interest in 3D design, due to the obvious impact it has on productivity,” said Edwin Severijn, vice president and managing director Benelux, Siemens PLM Software. “3D design offers many advantages and it dramatically helps customers meet the challenge of turning more ideas into successful products. We are convinced that the Spijkstaal designers will take full benefit to bring better products to market faster.”

The first prototypes that Spijkstaal designed with Solid Edge are an electric refuse collection vehicle and automatic electric vehicles, which will be shipped to Abu Dhabi.

“During the design phase, we collaborate with many partners across different countries. Components are designed, produced and assembled in different locations but thanks to Solid Edge and Teamcenter Express there is never a doubt whether these components will fit,” added Heijboer.

Solid Edge with synchronous technology is the core CAD component of the Velocity Series™ portfolio and incorporates Siemens PLM Software’s new breakthrough history-free, feature-based design technology. Teamcenter Express is the collaborative product data management (cPDM) component of the Velocity Series.

Velocity Series is a comprehensive family of modular, integrated solutions addressing the PLM needs of the mid-market. Consisting of a preconfigured family of digital product design, analysis and data management software offerings, Velocity Series leverages the industry’s best practices to provide significant breakthroughs in ease-of-use and deployment.
