Leica Geosystems announces the Leica RCD100, the first “all-in-one” medium-format mapping camera

April 06, 2009 — (Norcross) Leica Geosystems is pleased to announce the Leica RCD100, the first completely integrated medium-format mapping camera on the market. The Leica RCD100 is a highly productive, yet affordable, mapping solution for those who want to convert from analog to digital airborne imaging and for those who want productivity and efficiency for smaller to medium-sized photogrammetric mapping and orthophoto projects.

Fully integrated hardware
The temperature-controlled Leica RCD100 camera housing contains the control unit, highly reliable and exchangeable solid state memory, Leica IPAS20 Inertial Positioning and Attitude System with IMU and up to two 39MP frame sensors for single head or dual-head operation. Dual-head operation allows simultaneous image acquisition in RGB and CIR. Further, the Leica RCD100 offers 35mm, 60mm and 100mm exchangeable lenses and the most rigid lens mounting on the market. This ensures flexibility and photogrammetric stability without compromise where true mapping accuracy is needed.

End-to-end workflow
From flight planning with Leica FPES and flight management with Leica FCMS to orthophoto production, feature extraction and 3D mapping, the Leica RCD100 offers end-to-end workflow solutions from one vendor. When used with an existing Leica PAV30 or the new Leica PAV80 Gyro-stabilized Mount, the tight integration with Leica IPAS20 allows the generation of directly georeferenced imagery. The Leica RCD100 offers high photogrammetric accuracy and high data processing efficiency at an affordable price for many airborne mapping and orthophoto applications.

High productivity at a reasonable price
“I am very excited”, says George Southard, Vice President Americas, Digital Imaging. “The airborne imaging market today is mainly driven by productivity and price, and many of our analog customers have not yet made the move to digital image acquisition. As the leading airborne sensor manufacturer, we have an obligation to our customers to develop products that offer high productivity at a reasonable price. The new standalone Leica RCD100 “all-in-one” medium-format camera complements our established airborne sensor product lines and is the first complete medium-format mapping solution on the market. The addition of the Leica RCD100 Digital Camera System to our portfolio of RCD105 for ALS, Leica ALS60 LIDAR and Leica ADS80 Airborne Digital Sensor will allow our customers to choose from a unique portfolio of fully integrated imaging and workflow solutions for all airborne applications and for all budgets.”
