Bozeman, Montana Updates Maintenance Management with Cityworks

City Experiences Immediate and Sustained Results Utilizing Software

April 08, 2009 -- Sandy, UT — Previously operating a paper-based system to manage infrastructure and work maintenance, the City of Bozeman, Montana, made the transition to Cityworks, experiencing immediate results with a streamlined, automated processes. Utilizing the software by Azteca Systems, Inc., the leading provider of GIS-centric management solutions, the City is now able to more efficiently manage resources, quickly retrieve critical data, and virtually eliminate the use of paper work orders.

Like many Cityworks clients, the City of Bozeman made the move to Cityworks from a paper-based management system where work orders were written on paper, shuffled among staff, and ultimately stacked away in a warehouse, making it nearly impossible to review past work history on assets. Bozeman needed a more efficient way of managing this process and the ensuing data. Recognizing their excellent GIS data which is heavily used by several City departments, citizens, and the greater Gallatin Valley area, finding an application that fully incorporated GIS into asset maintenance management was crucial to the staff and management.

Bozeman discovered Cityworks was a natural fit as the only GIS-centric maintenance management system. The City made the decision to implement Cityworks in early 2008, holding their initial kickoff meeting February 18, 2008 and going live six weeks later. Bozeman implemented Cityworks in four of the City’s divisions including Water and Sewer, Forestry, Streets, and Signs. Running Cityworks Desktop and Cityworks Anywhere, ten of the City’s 17 licenses are dedicated to field use. Employees at Bozeman have felt the positive effect that Cityworks has on their operations.

“Since our Cityworks implementation, the amount of paper I handle has been cut by 90%,” stated John Alston, Superintendant of the Water/Sewer Department at Bozeman. “I like being able to look at the map at any time throughout the day and quickly see what outstanding work orders and service requests there are and their location without having to ask someone or go through a vast amount of paper to find out.”

Cityworks Anywhere has allowed City staff to better plan their work days. John continues, “With rising fuel and labor costs, Cityworks allows us to schedule work orders in similar areas of the city rather than ‘bouncing’ all over the city throughout the day, especially for work like the Curb Box Program, fire hydrant and sewer flushing, and our water valve exercise program, to name a few. I feel the Cityworks system has helped take our maintenance program up to a higher level of organization, and allow us to quickly access asset history at the touch of a mouse.”

“Organizations that understand the value of their GIS data, such as Bozeman, save time, money, and maximize resources,” states Brian Haslam, President of Azteca Systems. “It’s exciting to see the results Bozeman has experienced and knowing this will continue to grow in the future. Being the only maintenance management system that truly embraces GIS, Cityworks is the solution our clients choose to leverage their investment in GIS while also being a comprehensive system to manage critical assets and infrastructure.”
