Orange County Great Park Design Team Earns 2009 American Institute of Architects Award for Regional and Urban Design

SAN FRANCISCO, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Orange County Great Park Design Team was honored today at the American Institute of Architects National Convention and Design Exposition in San Francisco. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) selected the Orange County Great Park Design Team to receive the 2009 Institute Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design - the AIA's highest recognition for work that exemplifies excellence in architecture and urban design. The Great Park was selected from more than 700 submissions. It is one of six recipients to be honored for regional and urban design.

"On behalf of the Great Park Corporation and the Orange County Great Park Design Studio, we thank the AIA for recognizing the hard work and creativity that has gone into the Comprehensive Park Design of the Orange County Great Park," said Mike Ellzey, Great Park Chief Executive Officer. "We are honored to receive this prestigious award."

The Orange County Great Park will bring over 1,300 acres of urban parkland to the city of Irvine and the surrounding region. Planned on the former site of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, this large tract of redeveloped land will support a diverse range of world-class active and passive programs and include elements such as a botanical garden, great lawn, sports park, aviation and heritage museum spaces, and several arts and cultural facilities, including a large outdoor performance space.

Mia Lehrer, Great Park designer said upon receiving this award, "Creating the Great Park has been a project of a lifetime for all of our very talented designers, planners and team members. The entire team is striving to create a vision for a new kind of park for the 21st century."
