HP Brings the Future of Architecture to Life through International Architecture Contest

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 26, 2009 – HP, together with the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC) today announced a global architectural design contest aimed at emerging and professional architects and designers.

Under the theme of “Self-sufficient Cities,” the third annual International Architecture Contest emphasizes the importance of innovation for future environments. A jury of prominent leaders throughout the globe including representatives of world cities, architecture schools, top architects and engineers in addition to jurors from HP and the IaaC, will look for compelling innovations that reflect the ecological and technological needs of our future.

“We are pleased to collaborate with the IaaC through this contest and allow architects, urbanists and designers from around the world the chance to express their passion and bring sustainable development to the forefront,” said Kelly Tan, vice president of marketing, Graphics Solutions Business, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “HP is dedicated to providing solutions that help large firms and independent professionals in the technical industry redefine the future of design, help bring their visions to life and enhance their work by leveraging HP’s large format printing and imaging technology.”

To the contest winners, HP will provide the HP Designjet T Series printers to produce high quality renderings and plans, both essential to gain new customers as well as directing construction contractors. In addition, HP will involve its extensive network of print service providers to assist participants with design development. Two grand prize winners will receive scholarships valued at €12,500 for a one year Masters program in Advanced Architecture offered by IaaC. In addition, the winners also receive a cash award of €3,000 for the winner, €2,000 for the second place and €1,000 for third place.

From May 25th to September 28th, participants will be able to submit their “Self-sufficient Cities” designs for Barcelona and cities throughout the world via the IaaC web site at: http://www.advancedarchitecturecontest.org. The three finalists and overall winner will be announced in November 2010.

The IaaC is a latest-generation education and research center with a focus on defining new models of habitat for the 21st century. The IaaC acts as a network to which specialists from a variety of disciplines (ecologists, anthropologists, engineers, computer programmers, artists, sociologists and others) interact with architects in the attaining of knowledge and skills with which to develop advanced architecture. The Institute uses cutting-edge technologies to design and produce prototypes of self-sufficient habitats and works closely with other nodes of knowledge in various cities around the world, as well as participating in the Fab Lab network, effectively furthering our understanding of different realities and acting globally.
