MobiLaps LLC awarded National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreement Program (CAP) Grant

June 18, 2009 -- Silver Spring, MD – MobiLaps LLC announces that it was awarded the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreement Program (CAP) grant. MobiLaps’ winning concept focuses on leveraging the Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) Map and Data Services using the open source NASA WorldWind 3D Visualization Platform in support of NASA’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Mission Office at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The project will deliver an enhanced version of NASA WorldWind that provides not only premier 3D visualization and navigation of data but also premier data discovery and access though the NSDI infrastructure and its technology standards.

NASA WorldWind is an open source 3D geospatial information platform that is continually advanced by NASA, its partners and the open source community. It allows users to easily visualize and explore distributed geospatial information in a visually rich and extensible 3D environment. The opportunities to advance this premier open source technology are unencumbered by proprietary constraints and therefore provide the basis for an evolving platform that can reliably support the growth of the NSDI. The ability to use the technology in an unrestricted manner as well as participate in advancing it, helps to standardize and optimize the infrastructure necessary for accelerated innovation and maximum exchange of information.

Dr. Alameh, President of MobiLaps LLC, notes the importance of the effort as “it contributes to making the NSDI map and services more accessible to users, developers and integrators nationwide based on OGC standards and emerging technologies such as OpenSearch and GeoRSS”. Dr. Alameh is proud of MobiLaps’ continued partnership with the NASA WorldWind team.

In support of this effort, Patrick Hogan, NASA WorldWind Project Manager notes that “equipping WorldWind with the ability to connect to the NSDI right out of the box and via OGC standards has tremendous potential not only to our ongoing support to the NASA Search and Rescue Mission Office at Goddard, but also to the growing number of organizations selecting to adopt and adapt WorldWind for their decision support applications”. David Affens, NASA Search and Rescue Mission Manager, emphasizes that “the proposed work will further enhance our effort to leverage NASA WorldWind software for Search and Rescue use and contribute to our mission of advancing technologies that will help save lives and property, reduce SAR costs and reduce risks to SAR personnel”.
