Build Web-Based Maps and Applications with GeoExplorer

June 18, 2009 -- OpenGeo is proud to announce a preview release of GeoExplorer, OpenGeo's first released application using the GeoExt Javascript framework. This toolkit marries the spatial smarts of OpenLayers with the user interface power of ExtJS.

GeoExplorer brings functionality to the web that is traditionally found only in desktop GIS applications. The preview release is designed to demonstrate the types of web mapping applications you build with GeoExt. Give it a try!

This OGC standard compliant WMS client is made out of 100% open source web technologies. GeoExplorer bears OpenGeo's hallmark of interoperability: it's completely standards-based and will work with any WMS-compliant servers and allows users to explore data coming out of such WMS sources as GeoServer, MapServer, and ArcGIS.

"It makes displaying maps from your server incredibly easy," Technical Lead Tim Schaub said. "Users can just stick GeoExplorer in front of any WMS source and turn their data into a beautiful web-based map in no time."

A more feature filled release will follow the upcoming release of GeoExt 0.5 and will include additional capabilities such as map widget export and the ability to browse multiple WMS sources. for news on this project.
