ESRI’s ArcGIS Server Geoportal Extension—A Platform for Geospatial Collaboration

Share, Discover, and Use Geospatial Resources of Any Type from Anywhere

Redlands, California—July 8, 2009—The new 9.3.1 version of the ArcGIS Server Geoportal extension (formerly the GIS Portal Toolkit) is now available. Organizations can use this extension to create geoportals that allow them to manage geospatial data and publish the locations and descriptions of their geospatial resources to the Internet or an intranet. Visitors to a geoportal can easily search, discover, and connect to geographic information system (GIS) resources registered with the geoportal and integrate them into their own projects, regardless of the resource’s type or location.

At 9.3.1, the Geoportal extension improves efficiency and collaboration with enhancements for discovering and publishing GIS resources and integrating a geoportal with enterprise systems.

To discover more GIS resources, visitors can now search within a specific geoportal or published external geoportals. The Geoportal extension uses the ArcGIS API for JavaScript to preview resources such as ArcGIS Server, Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC), W*S; ArcIMS; and KML services, as well as GeoRSS feeds. These map services and feeds are previewed without loading a browser plug-in or launching a desktop GIS application.

Resource publishers will benefit from the many publishing enhancements. The simplified service registry allows services, including ArcGIS Server, OGC W*S, SOS, KML, and GeoRSS, to be registered quickly from the source URL. The Geoportal extension also adds support for the metadata standards that are required to participate in the North American and European National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) networks. Additionally, the Geoportal extension expands its use of external authentication with Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). Access to record-level metadata can be restricted with one of three access control policies. Publishers can be assured that their sensitive data remains behind the firewall and restricted to authorized employees and business units only.

The Geoportal extension can now integrate with many more aspects of the enterprise. The extension supports enhanced OpenSearch, which allows users to search the geoportal directly from their Web browser’s search box. It also supports many OGC standards, passing the OGC Compliance Test for Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) interfaces and using OGC CSW SOAP interfaces to integrate the geoportal into other enterprise systems that use SOAP services.
