The American Institute of Architects, California Council, Recognizes Mark Cavagnero, FAIA, With the 2010 Distinguished Practice Award

SACRAMENTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Oct 23, 2009 -- The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), announces Mark Cavagnero, FAIA, as the 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Practice Award. This award recognizes an individual architect's work, responses to the challenges of an individual building type, design excellence, innovations within the design and construction process, and a demonstrated collaborative spirit. The award is given in recognition of a career that exemplifies dedication and commitment to the built environment.

Founded 21 years ago, Mark Cavagnero Associates has fulfilled its founding vision by serving the public through the design of timeless public spaces. Working with principal Laura Blake, AIA, this vision continues to be cultivated today.

Public projects often involve an array of multiple parties, complex problems, limited budgets and years to complete. Just one example of this is the development of a master plan to expand the Oakland Museum of California, a landmark designed by Kevin Roche. The plan not only won the approval of the multiple stakeholders but Kevin's as well. Phase two of the plan was recently completed.

With the Charlie Sava Pool, (a public pool facility in San Francisco), the firm collaborated with consultants and builders to analyze and quantify various options. Working with the City, the firm was able to demonstrate the value of a new, more durable concrete building that takes full advantage of the site. This award-winning project was completed last year in a joint venture with Paulett Taggart Architects, and will serve the community for generations to come.

Since 1997, the firm has consistently received awards, a total of more than 30 accolades. Among the honors is the prestigious International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, for the Community School of Music and Arts, the only global awards program in architecture.

The AIACC congratulates and recognizes the many contributions and accomplishments of Mark Cavagnero Associates, as well as his profound leadership.

The AIACC represents the interests of more than 11,000 architects and allied professionals in California. Founded in 1944, AIACC's mission supports architects in their endeavor to improve the quality of life for all Californians by creating more livable communities, sustainable designs and quality work environments. Today The AIACC is the largest component of the national AIA organization. For more information, visit www.aiacc.org.
