3D Laser Mapping's StreetMapper to Survey Lithuanian Roads

February 02, 2010 -- The State Enterprise Transport and Road Research Institute in Lithuania has taken delivery of the latest StreetMapper system. Utilising state of the art laser scanning technology to achieve sub centimetre accurate measurements at normal traffic speeds StreetMapper will be used by the Institute’s Road Survey Division. It will be used to help evaluate the condition of the road network, plan road repair and reconstruction projects and provide additional information for economic justification of proposed works. The StreetMapper system, developed by 3D Laser Mapping, was supplied by Vilnius based Nota Bene distributors of StreetMapper for the Baltic region.

The Lithuanian State Enterprise Transport and Road Research Institute carries out research and design works with divisions active in Road Surveys, Bridge Surveys, Communication Development, Environmental Protection and Traffic Safety. The Road Survey Division undertakes surveys of road and street pavement looking at quality and strength and investigates and analyses traffic volume, traffic flow composition, vehicle loads and speed with results forming an essential input to road development programs.

“The StreetMapper system will enable us to capture higher quality survey data while travelling at normal traffic speeds,” commented Mindaugas Dimaitis, Head of the Road Survey Division at the Transport and Road Research Institute, Lithuania. “This obviously reduces the impact on other road users and provides an economic advantage over other systems previously deployed.”

StreetMapper 360, which is a joint development between 3D Laser Mapping and German guidance and navigation specialist IGI, has been specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings. Using vehicle-mounted Riegl VQ-250 lasers offering a 360-degree field of view StreetMapper enables high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second per sensor and recorded accuracies in independent real world projects of better than 10 millimetres. Travelling at speeds of up to 70 kmph StreetMapper can capture every detail along the highway corridor including barriers, gulleys, overhead wires and building facades, helping surveyors to create highly accurate 3D computer models for planning, maintenance and incident management.
