Cityworks Delivers Immediate Benefits for Greenville, SC

February 04, 2010 -- Sandy, UT — The City of Greenville, South Carolina, experienced immediate improvements in workflow and reporting with its use of Cityworks by Azteca Systems, Inc., the leading provider of GIS-centric management solutions. Implementing the software through a unique method, the City took advantage of the flexibility of Cityworks to meet their specific needs and are already reaping the benefits.

Greenville was an early adopter of GIS technology in 1984 as the 26th ESRI customer. With a commitment to use their GIS as a business system, City staff foresaw the benefits of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) that worked in conjunction with their spatial data. However, after implementing their first CMMS, City employees found they were working for the system rather than their system working for them. Greenville retired the system and deployed a local system that promised GIS compatibility. While still in the testing phase, City staff grew disappointed, finding issues with the product. With both systems failing to provide what they were looking for, they turned to Cityworks and were excited about the GIS-centric approach it offered.

With budget constraints due to the failure of their preceding systems, the City was in a position that required a creative approach for configuration and implementation. Working with Woolpert as their implementation partner, Greenville negotiated a scope of services for assistance with key aspects of development and approached the implementation using significant in-house staff resources with Woolpert’s assistance and interactive coaching. The development schedule was planned in phases with technical on-site sessions strategically spaced throughout the implementation process. The deployment team was able to get Cityworks in place in all areas within three months and the previous system completely offline within six months. In addition, some advanced improvements to workflows were addressed during this phase. Greenville was officially up and running with Cityworks in July of 2008. Subsequent development phases continue to provide occasions to revisit options for additional uses even now that Cityworks is up and running.

“This approach was possible due to the flexible nature of Cityworks which has proven to be a real advantage,” states Michael Davis, GIS Analyst at the City of Greenville. “Our experience in Greenville with the Cityworks work management system has resulted in immediate improvements to our internal workflows and subsequently in the City’s overall effectiveness at maintaining and reporting on our assets. Its flexibility allows future expansion to effectively manage a wide range of operational activities as well as improved access to information critical to Greenville’s future development and growth. Cityworks continues to prove itself to be the right choice for the City of Greenville.”

“Greenville came from the difficult background of having disappointing experiences with other software programs,” recalls Brian Haslam, President of Azteca Systems. “We were very happy they allowed us the opportunity to deploy Cityworks and help them customize their implementation to fit the City’s unique and specific needs. The inherent flexibility of Cityworks gives our users the opportunity to take our software and run with it, producing immediate and lasting benefits and while others offer the promise of GIS integration, Cityworks remains the only GIS-centric solution.”
