USGIF Welcomes New Board Members

Foundation Adds Jeff Jonas, Stephen Oswald and Dr. Peggy Agouris to Diverse Board

HERNDON, Va. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — February 25, 2010 — The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) today announced its Board of Directors voted on three new directors during its quarterly meeting held January 20. Joining the board and enhancing the breadth of knowledge, experience and strength of it are Jeff Jonas of IBM, Stephen S. Oswald of The Boeing Co., and Dr. Peggy Agouris of George Mason University.

“These three individuals, each with equally impressive and unique professional backgrounds, will bolster the activities of the board and help lead USGIF as the preeminent organization for the GEOINT Community,” said USGIF CEO and Chairman of the Board Stu Shea. “It is exciting and rewarding to be able to add to the rich composition of our directors with a distinguished industry visionary, a former astronaut and industry icon, and an academic exemplar.”

Mr. Jonas is IBM’s distinguished engineer and chief scientist of Entity Analytic Solutions for IBM Software Group. The IBM Entity Analytic Solutions group was formed based on technologies he developed as the founder and chief scientist of Systems Research and Development, which was acquired by IBM in January 2005. He is a member of the Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age and actively contributes to issues on privacy, technology and homeland security for leading national think tanks, privacy advocacy groups and policy research organizations, including the Center for Democracy and Technology, Heritage Foundation, Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Highlands Forum.

Mr. Oswald is vice president and general manager of Intelligence and Security Systems, a division of Boeing’s Network and Space Systems business unit. He is responsible for providing integrated solutions for intelligence community and homeland security customers. Before joining Boeing in 2001, U.S. Navy Reserve Rear Admiral Oswald served as deputy commander of a Washington-based Joint Task Force responsible for the defense of more than three million DoD computers and associated networks. During his government career with both the Navy and NASA, he served as a tactical pilot, test pilot, Space Shuttle astronaut and senior executive.

Dr. Peggy Agouris is professor of remote sensing and the chair of the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University. She also is the director of GMU’s Center for Earth Observing and Space Research. Dr. Agouris received her undergraduate degree in engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and her master’s and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Dr. Agouris has authored more than 100 scientific articles in journals, books and conference proceedings, and has edited three books and two journal special issues. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, NASA and other organizations.

During the Jan. 20 meeting, the directors also voted to add a board seat for a young professional. The yet-to-be-named chair is to be filled by a candidate completing a formal application process, which will be vetted and voted upon by the Board of Directors and seated by the next regularly scheduled meeting.

Keith J. Masback, president of USGIF, said that the addition of a young professional on the board is good for not only for the young professionals in the community but also the board and the Foundation. “As the Foundation membership continues to grow along with the GEOINT Community, it is imperative that USGIF outreach to our young professionals is robust,” Masback said. “The need to engage the future leaders and offer more diverse programs specific to their requirements is a must; and USGIF’s commitment is evident in its current activities and desire to add junior representation on our Board.”

These new directors join a Board that comprises Dr. William L. Ballhaus, president and CEO of DynCorp International; Aimee Correnti, USGIF vice president of operations; Joan Avalyn Dempsey, Booz Allen Hamilton vice president; Paul L. Graziani, president and CEO of Analytical Graphics Inc.; Leo A. Hazlewood, senior vice president of SAIC’s Mission Integration Business Unit; retired U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Michael G. Lee, vice president and general manager of military services at General Dynamics Intelligence Solutions Division; USGIF President Keith J. Masback; James A. Myer, president of Photon Research Associates Inc.; Matthew M. O'Connell, CEO and president of GeoEye; Herbert F. Satterlee III, CEO of Novariant; Jill Smith, CEO of DigitalGlobe; Michael M. Thomas, president of Global Security Solutions at Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services; and Christopher K. Tucker, principal at Yale House Ventures.
