Luciad builds Common Operational Picture for NextGen/SESAR

Luciad client for OGC OWS-7 Aviation project demonstrates AIXM 5.1 and WXXM capabilities

Leuven, Belgium — April 09, 2010 — Luciad, the specialist in high performance visualization for situational awareness applications in Aviation, will be demonstrating its Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) client in the OGC Web Services Test Phase 7 (OWS-7) Aviation initiative, sponsored jointly by the FAA and EUROCONTROL. The OWS-7 Aviation thread builds on the AIM thread of OWS-6 and will further develop and demonstrate the use of the Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) and the Weather Information Exchange Model (WXXM) in an OGC Web Services environment.

Both the FAA and EUROCONTROL plan to use the AIXM and WXXM standards in their System Wide Information Management (SWIM)-related components of the US NextGen and EU SESAR programs. Within this scope, the Aviation thread will evaluate WXXM for the 4D Weather Data Cube, a key NextGen concept.

Luciad is a longstanding leader in aeronautical information management and visualization, covering all aspects of modern ATM systems, from airspace management and trajectory support tools to airport and terminal operations. Luciad’s state-of-the art products are fully aligned with EUROCONTROL and FAA specifications; enabling advanced applications for high performance handling (decoding, encoding and editing) and visualization of AIXM 5 based aeronautical data and WXXM weather data.

The OWS-7 Aviation thread focuses on investigating and demonstrating a variety of Web Services using AIXM and WXXM for applications and tools that support Airline Operations Centers and Flight Dispatch applications. In this thread, Luciad will demonstrate its support for AIXM 5.1 and WXXM data via an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) device running realistic aviation scenarios including bad weather conditions, runway surface contaminations, closures and Special Use Airspaces (SUAs). The LuciadMap-based EFB provides pilots with a dynamic Common Operational Picture with up-to-date aeronautical and meteorological information. It includes temporality, digital NOTAM/SNOWTAM handling, and OGC Web Feature Server integration.

AIXM and WXXM have been jointly developed by the FAA and EUROCONTROL as global standards for the representation and exchange of aeronautical and weather information. The process and results of the OWS-7 Aviation thread will help both agencies in their efforts to increase industry adoption of AIXM and WXXM, and to support the operational use and validation of these emerging standards.

About Luciad

Luciad provides software solutions for high performance visualization of Situational Awareness applications. Luciad’s software components are the building blocks for mission-critical ATC/ATM and Air Command and Control systems.

Luciad’s core software suite is LuciadMap™, a software solution that system integrators and original equipment manufacturers can easily integrate into their systems. LuciadMap provides the framework and functionalities for achieving high situational awareness by very effectively handling large numbers of static and moving data on top of geographical information. This can include maps, satellite imagery, and terrain elevation in many different formats and references.

LuciadEarth Enterprise™ is a server software solution based on the same solid foundation as LuciadMap. The product is designed to manage, fuse, and serve massive amounts of static and dynamic data in network-centric environments.

Luciad also offers ATCPlayback™, a viewing capability to play back, review, and analyze simulated or recorded air traffic data. It is a powerful, user-friendly software suite that graphically replays and intuitively analyzes ATC simulation results. The product enables users to interactively refine the analysis process while graphically visualizing the results.

Dedicated to providing its clients with the best possible service, Luciad Professional Services will assess advanced system requirements and assist system integrators with the implementation of fully integrated solutions.

Luciad’s international customer base includes leading companies active in the aviation industry such as AENA, Belgocontrol, Boeing, DFS, DGAC, EADS, ENAV, EUROCONTROL, FAA, Lockheed Martin, LVNL, NATO, NATS, NavCanada , NLR, Saab, SAIC, Skyguide and Thales.
