IAA News: Avoiding detours thanks to truck navigation

Karlsruhe, Germany, — September 01, 2010 — PTV, a pioneer in the field of truck navigation, will be presenting the new truck navigator version 6 at IAA Commercial Vehicles. The maps now include a lot more information on access restrictions for trucks which help drivers to find the optimum route. The redesigned user interface has become even more user friendly and clearly structured. Another new feature is the realistic display of junctions and motorway signposts. From 23rd to 30th September, IAA visitors will have the opportunity to find out more about the new features of this smart truck navigation solution in hall 24, stand F13.

The navigation software takes truck-specific routing data that is part of the map material into consideration. It includes restrictions, such as clearance height or weight, no through truck roads or hazardous goods as well as alerts to sharp turns, steep uphill and downhill roads, etc. The volume of truck data has been substantially increased and now provides 80% coverage of the through roads in Germany, and even 100% in the Benelux countries, Switzerland, Austria and Great Britain. Truck data is also available for other European countries.

The latest visual extra features help truck drivers to easily follow the navigation instructions. This includes realistic junction views. In crucial situations, such as changing motorways or approaching exit ramps, a simplified 3D image appears which makes complex junctions easy to navigate. Realistic motorway signposts show the desired driving direction at a glance. Additionally, version 6 includes other major enhancements, such as cities and towns along the route, profiles, destination displays and exit numbers.

Another new feature is an interface which displays "buddies" on the map. Using this option, drivers can easily see the current position of the vehicles belonging to their own fleet in order to arrange a meeting or convoy driving.

The software provides all functions of a full-scale navigation system and considers truck-specific attributes, such as bridge heights and weight restrictions, vehicle clearance heights and roads closed to trucks. Moreover, the navigation system includes data for hazardous goods transport, such as roads closed to water-polluting shipments or explosive and poisonous substances.

It supports consistent routing via roads and streets suitable for trucks. Side streets which are usually unsuitable for trucks are avoided as often as possible. The software chooses an alternative route instead of local detours which helps drivers save time. And companies reduce costs because map&guide truck navigator selects the shortest route to the destination and avoids high-risk sections or roads.

The software for Pocket PCs and Car PCs is the ideal solution for transport companies who wish to upgrade their vehicle fleet system with a navigation tool. Stop-off point lists can be transferred to the map&guide truck navigator via multiple interfaces. These lists are then used for navigation purposes on the drivers' PDAs.
