SAMTECH to reveal its expertise in Space Launchers Modelling at Space Days 2010

Liege , Belgium – 1st October 2010. SAMTECH, the European specialist for the development of Computer Aided Engineering software using the Finite Element Method will actively support the 3rd edition of Space Days, to be held in Charleroi from the 11th to the 12th of October 2010 and dedicated to Space Launchers Modelling and Operations.

The Finite Element method originated during the sixties from the need for solving complex structural analysis problems in mechanical industry, in particular for space applications. With the Professor Fraeijs de Veubeke who created the Aerospace Laboratory of University of Liège in 1961 and initiated the development of the Finite Element Analysis software SAMCEF in 1965, Belgium was a precursor in the development of Virtual Prototyping techniques that are now widely developed and marketed since 1986 by SAMTECH.

The basic principle of the Finite Element Method is the mesh discretisation of a continuous domain into a set of discrete sub-domains, usually called "elements". In some sense, the method can be compared to a LEGO or a MECANO™, but completely Virtual. Thanks to the power of Computers, it helps nowadays a lot industrial designers to check the validity of their structural design even without having to build expensive physical prototypes.

The industrial software SAMCEF developed by SAMTECH since its creation in 1986, is currently widely used in the European aerospace Industry to support the design of space mechanical systems (launchers, turbo-pumps, satellites, solar arrays, large telecommunication antennas …). Numerous European actors of space Industry like ESA, EADS ASTRIUM Space Transportation, SNECMA SAFRAN Group, THALES ALENIA Space, SABCA, SONACA, TECHSPACEAERO, CNES, AIR LIQUIDE, CRYOSPACE … are extensively using SAMCEF sometimes, since more than 30 years.

During this Space Days 2010 event, in particular during the Modelling Session the 12th of October afternoon, senior engineering managers and their technical staff will see how advanced Finite Element Analysis technologies can improve Space Launchers development processes. The event also represents the perfect environment in which participants can exchange best practices in a wide range of Modelling domains applicable to Launchers including metallic or composite structures analysis, stress analysis, fracture mechanics, post-buckling, rigid or flexible mechanisms analysis, thermal analysis, ablation, multi-disciplinary optimisation, multiphysics, CAD/CAE integration...
