IGN France INTERNATIONAL WILL SUPERVISE WORK FOR THE CREATION OF A GEODETIC NETWORK OF CAMEROON

Last December, IGN France International was awarded the technical assistance contract for the supervision of work leading to the update of the country’s geodetic network. The work will be completed by the Fugro Geoid company.

February-28, 2011 - The Ministry of Land Affairs (MINDAF) in Cameroon, who had undertaken the updating of its geodetic network, inaugurated the first pillar in Yaounde on December 29 of last year in the presence of the Minister of State in charge of land issues, Jean-Baptiste BELEOKEN, who represented the Prime Minister.

The updating of this geodetic network clearly stands out as a priority defined in the action plan created by the government for the period from 2010-2020. Even though each city had its own local network, these networks were not connected to each other, nor were they united on a national level. They were not at all compatible with modern positioning technologies, more specifically with GPS.

The goal of the current project is thus to complete 25 reference pillars (approximately 1 pillar per 200 kilometres) and a complementary network made up of 500 points over the entire country (10 regions, 58 departments and 378 towns).

The field work will be completed by the Fugro Geoid company while IGN France International will control the work by sending experts from the Geodesy and Levelling department (SGN) of the French IGN .

These experts, equipped with there years of experience within the French Geographic Institute, are absolutely indispensable when it comes to technical issues. They also have extensive experience in the field. Several of them have already worked in various African and Middle Eastern countries,” stated Alain Gervaise, regional manager at IGN France International.

The updating of the country’s geodetic network will contribute to securing the country’s land data and implementing a land information system with multiple uses that will eventually be available to different governmental departments as well as to companies.
