Storm Sewer Capacity Improvement Project Named 2011 Seven Wonders of Engineering

ST. PAUL, Minn. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 1, 2011 — The Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) awarded Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. (SEH®) and the University of Minnesota a 2011 Seven Wonders of Engineering award for its design and construction support of the Pleasant Street Storm Sewer and Chilled Water Line Improvements on the University of Minnesota campus.

The MSPE selected the project to recognize outstanding achievements in the field of engineering based on the project’s engineering methods, complexity, overall significance, and the extent to which the project meets the needs of the clients.

SEH provided planning, design, and construction phase services to provide adequate storm sewer capacity that would accommodate stormwater run off in one of the University’s oldest and most historic areas – the Knoll District. The SEH-led efforts allow the University of Minnesota to continue to implement its campus-wide stormwater management efforts.

To protect both the historic Walter Library and the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute for Advanced Computational Research located inside the library, SEH developed an extensive preconstruction condition survey of the library and its immediate surroundings, as well as a seismic monitoring program. The library’s electric, data, and gas service lines passed within a few feet of the upsizing operation needing constant protection.

The Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) is a professional association of nearly 1,400 licensed professional engineers, practicing engineers, engineering graduates and engineering students in nine local chapters throughout Minnesota. MSPE serves the needs of Minnesota's engineers working in private practice, industry, construction, government and education and is the only organization that represents engineers in all disciplines.
