PCI Geomatics congratulates Dr. Geoffrey Hinton on winning Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal

Richmond Hill, Ontario – April 14, 2011: PCI Geomatics, a world-leading developer of geo-imaging software and systems, congratulates Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, a Professor in the University of Toronto’s Department of Computer Science, on winning this year’s Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal award. The individual award, widely regarded as Canada's top award for science and engineering, recognizes continued excellence and influence in research in natural sciences and engineering.

“It is with great admiration and respect that I extend congratulations on behalf of myself, and the team at PCI Geomatics, to Dr Hinton,” said Terry Moloney, CEO of PCI Geomatics. “We at PCI see significance in Dr Hinton’s work at the University of Toronto; especially with regards to pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. This award is well-earned.”

Dr. Hinton’s research endeavors to recognize how the human brain functions and replicate those processes with the use of computers. This work is contributing to applied sciences, engineering, social sciences and medicine fields.

PCI Geomatics takes great interest in Dr Hinton’s work as it relates to the company’s commercialization of advanced technology for processing and analyzing satellite imagery.  PCI Geomatics is creating a high-speed computing framework and software suite that uses advanced automation to process large amounts of imagery faster and more cost-effectively. Dr. Hinton’s innovations in perception, learning algorithms, and symbol processing will play a key role in PCI Geomatics’ own research and commercial software development.

The Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering has been awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada since 1993. The award celebrates Canada's most outstanding scientists and engineers, raising awareness about the many scientific achievements made by Canadian researchers every year.
