Oracle(R) Database 11g Running on Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M8000 Server Beats HP and IBM on Non-Clustered One Terabyte Scale Factor TPC-H Benchmark

REDWOOD SHORES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Jun 07, 2011 -- Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL)

News Facts

  • Continuing to deliver hardware and software engineered to optimize performance and efficiency, Oracle today announced a new TPC-H 1TB benchmark, which showcases the superior scalability of Oracle® Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M8000 server(1).
  • Today's result demonstrates Oracle's exceptional SPARC performance versus comparative platforms HP Superdome 2 and IBM Power 780(2,3).
  • Part of Oracle's SPARC server family, the SPARC Enterprise M8000 server continues to deliver increased performance, unmatched reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS), and extensive expansion and virtualization capabilities.

Benchmark Details

  • The SPARC Enterprise M8000 server configured with SPARC64 VII+ processors, Oracle's Sun Storage F5100 Flash arrays, Oracle Solaris -- the #1 enterprise operating system -- and Oracle Database 11g Release 2 achieved a TPC-H performance result of 209,533 QphH@1000GB with a price/performance of $10.13/QphH@1000GB.
  • The Sun Storage F5100 Flash Arrays used in this benchmark delivered measured I/O performance of over 16 GB/sec. They continue to provide world record performance(4) in a compact 1RU form factor that enables reduced power consumption and helps free up valuable data center floor space.
  • This result demonstrates that Oracle Database 11g Release 2 ran nearly 50 percent faster on the SPARC Enterprise M8000 server than on the HP Superdome 2, while delivering 16 percent better price performance(2).
  • Additionally, Oracle's solution ran 27 percent faster than IBM's Power 780-based configuration running Sybase IQ database, while executing refresh functions up to 3.8 times faster(1,3). Refresh functions insert or remove large amounts of data from the database and deliver better performance when running database software on a system with well-balanced I/O resources.
  • A recent study also demonstrates that Oracle's focus to deliver hardware and software engineered together provides better customer value than IBM in terms of real-world performance and lower TCO(5).
  • The benchmark underscores the ability of SPARC Enterprise M-series servers, running Oracle Solaris, to handle the increasingly large databases required for decision support and data warehousing systems. Neither IBM nor HP matched this level of performance in the 1TB scale factor category using a single system, further highlighting the performance capabilities of multi-processor SPARC systems and flash-based storage for the most demanding enterprise applications.

Supporting Quote

  • "Today's outstanding TPC-H result is another proof point to the excellent performance of Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle Sparc Enterprise M8000," said Juan Loaiza, Senior Vice President, Systems Technology, Oracle. "Oracle running on Sun hardware continues to demonstrate much better performance than comparable offerings from IBM or HP."
