Majenta PLM supplies, implements Siemens NX design software at leading super-yacht designer

Cranfield, Beds., UK. 22 June, 2011. – Majenta PLM, Europe’s foremost Siemens Industry Software business partner, has announced that it has been awarded a contract by leading super-yacht design company, John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs, to supply and implement Siemens NX design software. The software will be used throughout the whole yacht design process, including conceptual design, hull fairing and detailing, structural design, interior design and superstructure and deck gear design and detailing.

The ability of NX to integrate fully the different phases of the design process, from conceptual design to detail drafting and also to model the complex free-form surface shapes that characterise the deck superstructures, as well as more prismatic engineering forms such as structural components and deck gear, were among the reasons given by Shuttleworth for selecting NX. In addition, it was important to them that data from their other, existing design software products could be integrated into any new solution.

“I knew that Majenta PLM had implemented well integrated design solutions elsewhere and this was something I was keen to replicate at Shuttleworth Designs in order to keep us at the cutting edge of what we do”, said Orion Shuttleworth, designer, John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs.

With their new solution, the final 3D models created in NX of a complete yacht, including the hull form originally created in MacSurfPro (a popular hull-shape design tool among the yacht design community) form an integral part of the design package that John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs now issues to a ship-yard. Along with a comprehensive set of 2D detail drawings, these models enable the yard to take measurements and sections required for the construction process and to generate CNC tool paths for cutting patterns for mould tools.

The NX model is also used to generate photo-realistic visualisations of the yacht’s exterior and interior for client presentation and design review purposes during the design process.

  Key role in new super-yacht

One of the first projects in which NX software has played a key role at John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs is the design of the new power super-yacht, ‘Adastra’.  Described by the boating press as ‘one of the world’s most amazing super-yachts, that could spell the future for efficient long-range cruising’, the striking 42.5m trimaran ‘Adastra’, which has a maximum speed of 22.5 knots and a range of 4000 miles (6500 km) at 17 knots, is being built at a shipyard in China for clients in Hong Kong.

“The use of NX has enabled us to increase the quality and detail of the design package that we offer our clients,” said Shuttleworth. “It also enables us to adapt quickly and to modify the design to accommodate the inevitable changes in direction that occur during the yacht design process. It certainly helped us during the design of Adastra”, he concluded.

  About John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs

Based in West Sussex, off the south coast of England, John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs specialises in the production of stock plans and custom designs of sail, power and sail-assisted power catamarans and trimarans, both for racing and for cruising. Company owner and chief designer John Shuttleworth has a worldwide reputation for designing fast, strong and safe boats. With a background in engineering and computer-aided design, he developed a new approach to yacht design and engineering in the 1980s, which resulted in boats that were lighter, stiffer and stronger than any previous multi-hull designs. His trimarans took line-honours and third over the line in the Single-Handed TransAtlantic Race in 1984, setting a new race record. In 1988 his trimarans won Class 3 and Class 6, breaking the Class 6 record by over six days.

Today he is using his structural design technology and his fast, aerodynamic hull shapes to design power and sailing multi-hulls and to develop sail-assisted power boats, where significant savings in fuel consumption and increased range can be achieved.
