Berlin, GERMANY March 6, 2012: virtualcitySYSTEMS GmbH, a leading systems integrator and provider of 3D geospatial projects and solutions in Europe today announced that it has delivered to Berlin Partner – the investment agency arm of Germany’s capital – the first web-based solution for distributing the 3D city model of Berlin. The new 3D platform was unveiled this week by Berlin Partner at this year’s MIPIM in Cannes, one of the most influential exhibitions for the international real estate industry in the world.
Berlin’s 3D city model – created in 2008 and perhaps the largest 3D city model ever transported to Google Earth – is famous alone for its sheer size: over 560,000 buildings in Level-of-Detail 2 (LoD2) with façade textures. Primarily used as a decision-making and presentation tool for potential investors, the 3D model has played a key role in helping companies find the right real estate and get a better understanding of what Berlin’s infrastructure has to offer through a clever combination of real-time 3D navigation and a sophisticated database of updated information about Berlin real estate and all relevant location-based standard information.
virtualcitySYSTEMS uses the 3DMAPS API from Agency9 as a basis to create virtualcityMAPS, a web-based framework solution for viewing and distributing 2D and 3D data first launched at the INTERGEO Nürnberg in 2011.

The Berlin City Model in virtualcityMAPS features a 2D-window that includes aerial photography, the ground cadastre map and public transportation; a second window for navigating through the textured 3D city model and a third “panoramic” window containing terrestrial imagery from Google StreetView. Users can switch easily and quickly between all three windows, always geo-referenced in the same location with accuracy within 20 meters or less.

This technology enables not only municipalities to distributes those models in an easy and efficient way, but represents an opportunity for all industries that utilize geospatial data – from utilities to transport to construction and surveying,” observed Mr. Jung.
3DMaps offers a controllable environment for delivering 3D geoportals quickly. It is unique in that it offers high performance real-time 3D on the Web, without the need to install specific plug-ins. Users are free to visualise any common map data and meta information in a map view.
