QUEENS, NY -- (Marketwired) -- Sep 13, 2013 -- World Maker Faire New York, the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth on September 21 and 22 at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) in Queens, will offer an abundance of opportunities for Faire-goers to get practical experience and kickstart their own maker skills. Attendees can participate in workshops and special areas of the event as well as in many maker exhibits to learn from the experts themselves.

The opportunities for interactive participation are many across a wide range of topics and will reach across the spectrum of skill levels, from novice through advanced. Attendees are sure to find something that delights the maker in them. Here are some examples:

  • RadioShack Corporation will host the " Learn to Solder" area. New makers can get first-hand experience and learn a skill that is an excellent start to making things.

  • TOOOL, The Open Organization of Lockpickers, will be teaching Faire visitors how to pick a lock -- any lock! -- in Lockpick Village.

  • The 3D Printing Village will be teeming with updates, experts, and demonstrations to help 3D printing enthusiasts do more with their love for making their own fabrications.

  • Affine Creations will demonstrate the art of woodworking including how to cut dovetails and doing hand-finishing work.

  • Swap-o-Rama-Rama, one of the largest clothing swaps around, will be running all sorts of DIY workshops, to get attendees' creative juices flowing as they create new articles of clothing from old. Lots of supplies, helpers, tips, and tricks will be available.

  • Back by popular demand, Skraptacular will show attendees how to make art from discarded, plastic materials.

  • Guests can get up to speed with Raspberry Pi via Learn How to Make a RasPiRobot, Low Voltage Labs' demonstrations, and more.

  • For fans of flight, there will be plenty of chances to get an aero-fix, including: Make an AeroQuad open source multicopter: learn how to build an Air Rocket Glider: and make an inexpensive, easy to build, open-source, fully-functional device with Aircrafts, Hovercrafts & Quadcopters for the Masses!

  • The National Needlearts Association will be teaching makers of all ages how to knit, crochet, cross-stitch and spin in the Needlearts Zone.

  • The Welding Trailer will house several virtual simulator stations to help attendees explore welding and learn a new skill.

  • Kids Teaching Kids will be showcasing the Makey Makey Invention Kit and engaging young Faire participants in activities led by peer educators.

  • The team from Genomikon will be teaching genetic engineering to the masses, including building their own bacteria and how make colors and smells.

RadioShack Corporation returns to World Maker Faire New York 2013 as a Goldsmith Sponsor hosting the "Learn to Solder" area. "RadioShack is thrilled to be back at the event to interact with young makers and connect with the people we see as the future of making. It's important to have a personal relationship with our core audience because we learn first-hand about their interests. It's a very exciting time for us," said Joe Magnacca, RadioShack's chief executive officer. Jennifer Warren, chief marketing officer for RadioShack, echoes the excitement, "We look forward to meeting new makers, and seeing the many new innovations and inventions World Maker Faire has to offer. We invite all attendees to stop by RadioShack's Learn to Solder area to check out the fun."

A first for World Maker Faire New York, and the New York Hall of Science, is a compost pile designed and built by Build It Green!NYC and fueled by organic scraps deposited by attendees. "Build It Green!NYC and BIG!Compost are pleased to be partnering with Maker Faire and the New York Hall of Science to create a composting structure for this event. Last summer we collected 2,000 pounds of organic waste at World Maker Faire, and we are excited that this year we will be able to process the food scraps at NYSCI," Justin Green, Build It Green!NYC's Program Director. Build It Green!NYC is furthering World Maker Faire's sustainability initiatives by directly involving attendees who will help build the BIG!Compost pile by supplying it with organic waste throughout the event. The compost pile will thrive throughout the year as NYSCI will maintain it, use the fresh soil on the NYSCI grounds, and offer new programs to visitors to raise awareness about re-use and recycling. At World Maker Faire, Build It Green!NYC will also host an education area where attendees can learn more about their local efforts as well as participate in an upcycled crafts area where they can make donated bathroom tiles into mosaic coasters.

Maker Faire
Created by the editors of MAKE magazine, Maker Faire is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, CA and in May 2013 celebrated its eighth annual show with some 900 makers and 120,000 people in attendance. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in just four years and expects over 600 makers and 70,000 attendees this September. Detroit, Kansas City, Newcastle (UK), Rome, and Tokyo are the home of "featured" 2013 Maker Faires (200+ makers), and community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the United States and the world.
