Cloud Based CAD Trends from the Business Advantage Worldwide CAD Trends Survey

Cloud based CAD - 130% Growth Anticipated in Year Ahead, 260% within 5 Years

March 6th, 2014 - The IT, software and telecom industry research specialist Business Advantage Group announced its 2014 Worldwide CAD Trends Survey last week and this week announced more details specific to the Cloud based CAD Trend.

“Cloud based CAD is currently used by 7% of CAD users that responded to the survey and strong future growth is anticipated.  By the end of this year 16% (~130% growth [L1] ) expect to be using it and in the next 5 years 25% (~260% growth [L2] ) expect to be using it. Obviously this trend is a relatively new area and the respondents currently gave Cloud based CAD low average importance and below average usage, but strong future growth potential.  Current usage is similar across industry sectors and regions although the faster growth over the next 5 years is more likely to come from the Americas [L3] and Asia/Pacific than EMEA”, said Chris Turner, CEO/Managing Director of Business Advantage.

“Clearly Cloud based CAD is changing the existing business and delivery models for software companies. Rather than software being deployed and used locally Cloud based CAD enables the software to be loaded and run somewhere else.  It’s not yet obvious whether this trend will best serve users or software companies switching to annuity based revenue models but the CAD Trends survey offers some early clues.  Firstly the relatively ‘high awareness’ (47%) indicates high user interest and the low usage so far (7%) may be down to the relative newness of this trend, however the relatively low importance (3.7 out of 10) may indicate that the ROI isn’t yet obvious to users.  Secondly, based on those CAD users already using or planning to use Cloud based CAD, the main benefits are seen as higher mobility (76%), increased storage capacity (36%), ease of updating software (35%) and cost reductions (33%).   Time will tell whether the benefits of higher mobility will sustain this trend or whether other benefits will come to drive the Cloud based CAD trend.”

  [L1]Its 128%

{(16-7)/7} x 100I assume this has been rounded off

  [L2]Should be 257%{(25-7)/7} x 100 If rounded off, 260%

[L3] In Americas 16% said they would use cloud in next 3-5 years.  Doesn’t really indicate growth rate.

Growth rate

Using now  7%

Using in 12 months   14% (7% + 7%)

Using next 3-5 years 30% (14% + 16%)

Therefore growth rate over next 3-5 years would be {(30-7)/7} x100 = 328.57%

Rounded off to 330%

Growth rate for APAC is also 330%EMEA 200%
