Maker Faire Bay Area 2014 Delivers Unprecedented Program Line-Up Highlighting Maker Movement Growth

  • Maker Square: This stage will host experts from the original maker movement: food and farming. From healthy soils and backyard animal-keeping to cheese-making, fermentation, and home-brewing, Faire visitors will be able to explore the skills needed to take their food and urban farming to the next level.
    • Greg D'Alesandre from Dandelion Chocolates: Making Bean to Bar Chocolate at Home -- As Chocolate Sourcerer, D'Alesandre travels the world to find the best cacao possible and figures out how to turn it into great chocolate.
    • Byron Dote from Sweet Maria's Coffee: Home Coffee Roasting -- Dote is a DIY coffee-roasting expert and will show attendees how easy it is to roast the freshest coffee at home with just a popcorn popper and a few everyday kitchen items.

  • Hands-On Homegrown Village Workshop: From making marshmallows at home to pickling, DIY tea blending, and cultivating mushrooms, homesteaders can get up close and personal with learning new food-making methods and techniques to do more at home.
    • Kate Williams: DIY Siracha -- Williams will demonstrate the process behind making homemade fermented Sriracha hot sauce, covering the basic science behind lacto-fermentation in addition to the step-by-steps of the recipe. Williams is a personal chef and food writer with her work appearing in popular publications and websites such as KQED's Bay Area Bites, The Oxford American, America's Test Kitchen cookbooks, and Food52.
    • Brandy Reynolds: Sourdough Starters -- Reynolds will demonstrate how to make and keep a healthy sourdough starter using the natural yeasts from the air. She's spent the last 5 years teaching heirloom skills through many venues around the Bay Area, including fermentation, soap-making, gardening, canning, animal husbandry, foraging, and more.

As Faire goers have become accustomed to, Maker Faire will offer a number of hands-on learning experiences, including the Learn to Solder area hosted by returning Goldsmith Sponsor, RadioShack Corporation. "RadioShack is excited to be a part of the energy and innovation we see happening within maker communities across the country. We have a passion for partnering with makers and supporting interactive activities like the Learn to Solder area at Maker Faire Bay Area," said RadioShack CEO Joe Magnacca. "As we redesign our stores across the country, we are doing so with the maker in mind. Our new concept stores feature idea stations, interactive areas, and work surfaces where customers can collaborate with each other and our store associates as part of our Do It Together initiative. Makers are part of our history and an important part of our future as well." Maker Faire participants are encouraged to stop by RadioShack's pop-up shop to experience the products the company offers and purchase items at special Maker Faire prices.

About Maker Faire
Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth -- a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. It's a place where people of all ages and backgrounds gather together to show what they are making and share what they are learning.

Maker Faire celebrated 100 Faires in 2013 alone and has reached over 1.5 million attendees globally since it launched in San Mateo, California, in 2006, less than a year after the publication of the first MAKE Magazine in 2005. The eighth annual Maker Faire Bay Area welcomed some 950 makers and 120,000 attendees. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in four years to 600+ makers and 75,000 attendees. Detroit, Kansas City, Rome, Oslo, Newcastle (UK), Tokyo and Shenzhen host our "featured" Maker Faires (200+ makers), and community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires inspire and ignite creative communities everywhere around the United States and internationally.

Located in Sebastopol, California, Maker Media has been widely credited with jumpstarting the worldwide Maker Movement, which has been a transforming force in innovation, culture, and education. In addition to publishing MAKE Magazine and producing Maker Faire, Maker Media develops "getting started" kits and books it sells through its Maker Shed store as well as other retail channels.
