Aedas Interiors-designed hotels sweep best hotel awards

Sep 26, 2017 - Twr y Felin Hotel was named AA Hotel of the Year - Wales for its ‘excellent design and presentation’ at last night’s AA Hospitality Awards in London, UK; while Roch Castle Hotel received The Best 5-star Hotel in Wales award at trivago Awards 2017. Aedas Interiors designed the graceful and timeless elegance interiors for these hotels in St Davids, Wales, UK. Within the historic fabric of the two hotels, leather carpeting and furnishings, oiled wood flooring and doors, lime plaster walls and bronze windows create a calm modern ambience with an attention to detail which defines truly unique products. 16 artists were commissioned to create art works inspired by St Davids which reinforces the quality and essence of these hotels.

Twr y Felin Hotel is an 18th Century converted windmill tower at the entrance to St Davids. Built in 1805, it was extended as a hotel in high Victorian style in 1905 but by 1985 was closed and dilapidated. Aedas Chairman Keith Griffiths’ Historic Trust acquired it and completed restoration work as Wales’ first art hotel in 2016. The hotel houses over 120 pieces of commissioned artwork throughout the rooms and public spaces. Fine dining restaurant Blas has also received multiple accolades.

Roch Castle Hotel is a 12th Century romantic castle set high on a rocky hill with panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and Welsh mountains. With its two-metre thick walls and commanding presence, Roch Castle was a frontier fortress during the Norman conquest of the UK. It was also the birthplace and home of Lucy Walter, King Charles II’s mistress and mother of his child, James, Duke of Monmouth. Ransacked by Cromwell in 1644 it remained a ruin until its first restoration in 1905. It again fell into disrepair and was finally rescued from ruin in 2013 by Keith Griffiths and the Aedas team.

Keith Griffiths was brought up in the tiny village-city of St Davids and created a Historic Building Trust to immaculately restore three of St Davids’ historic buildings as luxury boutique hotels. In addition to Twr y Felin Hotel and Roch Castle Hotel, there is Penrhiw Hotel which is a 19th century priory set in the wooded seclusion of the St Davids Cathedral Close. This elegant Tudorbethan Priory is built of the same purple sandstone as the Cathedral itself. It was a small nunnery until 1985 and is a place of great spirituality and peace. It was completely dilapidated before its 2011 conversion into a luxury boutique hotel with interiors again by Aedas. All these hotels are situated within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park which covers 620 square kilometres of spectacular landscape around Wales' south-western shore.
