Cerelink(R) Digital Media Group to Explore Cloud Computing Services for CG Film Production

RIO RANCHO, N.M., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Cerelink DMG, a New Mexico company, has entered into an agreement with DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (NYSE: DWA) to explore the development of technology and infrastructure that would enable computer generated (CG) film rendering as a cloud computing service.

Richard Draper, Managing Partner of Cerelink DMG said, "With the technical innovation and real world computing demands of DreamWorks Animation, we're bringing the future of cloud computing to New Mexico. This effort is expected to create new opportunities and demand for New Mexico-based talent and services within the digital media sector."

The effort could virtually extend DreamWorks Animation's private rendering cloud to a New Mexico cluster dedicated exclusively to DreamWorks Animation. The expanded digital resource would be used to address peak rendering demands of the California studio. CG film production and visual effects require massive amounts of computational resources, typically tens of millions of computing hours, during the normal course of a production. Delivering on-demand and scalable computing resources as a cloud service is a desirable asset in an industry known for ever increasing and variable demand.

As part of the project, the New Mexico Computing Applications Center (NMCAC), in collaboration with UNM, the New Mexico Department of Information Technology, National LambdaRail, and Cerelink DMG have established and tested an ultra high speed link connecting New Mexico to Hollywood. This link is critical to the support of ongoing and future digital media R&D activities between New Mexico and California. With continued state investments, NMCAC and its partners established this capability as a direct response to the growing digital media and motion picture production industry in New Mexico.

"DreamWorks Animation has a rich history in technical innovation for film production," said Ed Leonard, CTO of DreamWorks Animation. "We're excited about working with Cerelink to explore bringing cost-effective and scalable on-demand computing to meet our needs."
